Tamluk, July 6: The last two companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been pulled out of Nandigram.WB Inspector-general of police (law and order) Raj Kanojia said "normality" had returned to the war zone and the central paramilitary was not required anymore. "We reviewed the situation and got feedback from the district administration that the situation is normal there," said Kanojia. But there were clashes in Nandigram today, less than 24 hours after the central force vacated two high schools at Rajaramchowk and Gokulnagar. At least four Trinamul Congress supporters were injured in clashes with CPM cadres. Two policemen were beaten up by a Trinamul mob.
Kanojia said: "These are all stray incidents. State forces are there to tackle them."Nandigram had witnessed violent clashes in February after some CRPF and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel had to be rushed to Darjeeling and Orissa. The panchayat polls in May were conducted with four companies of the CRPF.Two companies were withdrawn after the polls, in which Trinamul swept Nandigram.
Six companies had been deployed in Nandigram last November, days after the CPM cadres' violent recapture of the area that had turned into a Trinamul stronghold.
WB Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had sought the force in the wake of escalating violence.
Ten people from both sides — the CPM and the Trinamul-led Bhoomi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee — were killed.
East Midnapore superintendent of police S.S. Panda said the 400 state police personnel posted in Nandigram were "adequate to maintain law and order".
The Trinamul supporters assaulted the policemen in Sonachura last evening when the force came to drop a rescued man who had been held hostage by CPM cadres.
"A group of CPM activists had gheraoed Trinamul supporter Aloke Mondal, whom we rescued. But when the police escorted Aloke to his house, nearly 50 Trinamul supporters surrounded the jeep and beat up assistant sub-inspector Susanta Chakraborty and constable Biswanath Dey with rods and sticks. We have lodged an FIR," said Nandigram officer-in-charge Debashish Chakraborty.
Bombs were hurled and bullets fired at Jadubarichar and Kendamari around noon yesterday and at Tulaghat on the Nandigram-Khejuri border last night. Clashes with rods and sticks were reported from several places.

Several hundred leaders and activists gathered on the hospital premises at about 10:30am to see ailing Tarique Rahman, senior joint secretary general of BNP, who was scheduled to be produced in the court at Jatiya Sangsad Complex in a graft case on the day.

Of them, four persons were killed in a landslide at Puran Pallan Para village in Teknaf upazila of the district on Sunday. The landslide followed the two incidents one of which had occurred in the same village and another one in Natun Pallan Para village early Thursday claiming nine lives of two families.

Rescued Jumbo calf dies at Gorumara
Jalpaiguri,7July: An elephant calf twice rejected by its herd and rescued by foresters died in Gorumara National Park today."We found it very weak. It did not display the inherent reflexes of elephant calves," said divisional forest officer Tapas Das. Vets, mahouts and forest officials worked tirelessly to help it recuperate, but failed. Das said the condition of Ganeshi — as the female, about seven or eight months old, had been named — deteriorated yesterday. "We administered around 30 bottles of saline," Das said. "It revived the calf a bit but its health deteriorated again as soon as it urinated. We also found blood in the stool yesterday." Ganeshi died around noon today."Our worst fears came true as several ulcers were found in the calf's abdomen. Its spleen was white, indicating the lack of RBC formation, which had increased its weakness and reduced immunity. A throat congestion with mucous had aggravated its illness," Das said. The death brought to a close an extraordinary sequence of events that began in the third week of June when foresters were trying to bring back a herd of 50 elephants from the India-Nepal border after a calf and an adult were killed by electric shock and gunshots. The adult, which was lactating, is believed to be Ganeshi's mother. On June 26, when the herd was on its way back to the Bengdubi forest, the calf was found alone in a cornfield. The herd had probably left the straggler behind. At a beat office, foresters led by Sukna range officer Kanchan Banerjee gave the calf water, kept it under observation for a day and released it near the herd. However, while the herd crossed the Balason to reach Bamanpokhri, about 20km from Siliguri, the calf was found alone on a field near the army ammunition depot at Bengdubi. "We took no chances this time and shifted the calf to Gorumara for treatment. It had been there since," the range officer said.

Arrested Czech scientists may be part of International insect smuggling racket
Derjeeling, 9July: The arrest of two Czech nationals in Derjeeling on 22 june— who introduced themselves as a scientist and a forester and collected several rare species of butterflies and insects without permission from the forest department — has literally opened a can of worms. Forest officials fear that they trespassed into Singalila National Park with a motive. And they might be part of a global network that trades in endangered varieties of butterflies and insects that fetch millions of dollars in the international market. According to the forest department, one of the arrested, Peter Svacha, even has a website on which he has posted offers to sell some rare butterflies. Svacha and his companion Emil Kucera — who claimed to be a forester — were remanded in jail custody till July 21 by the Darjeeling court on today. Forest officials seized 60 butterflies, over a dozen rare varieties of beetles and moths from them after their arrest from a Darjeeling hotel on 22 june. The catch, made at the national park in Darjeeling, is estimated to be worth Rs 10 crore in the international market. It has been sent to the Zoological Survey of India for analysis. Investigators are proceed-ing cautiously because the accused scientist is apparently well known and finds mention on several websites. While the butterflies are listed in Schedule I, the beetles are included in Schedule II of the Wild Life Protection Act. Neither Svacha nor Kucera had clearance or permission to collect butterflies from Singalila National Park. "But they were carrying all the necessary equipment, which shows they had come with a purpose. It can't be that they were not aware that permission had to be sought. The two had insect catching nets, an axe, a saw, a lamp and glue. They were even carrying preservatives. We suspect the butterflies and insects would either have been smuggled to China or to some European country from the Czech Republic," said Utpal Nag, assistant divisional forest officer of Darjeeling. "Both are well aware of the forest rules and regulations in India and had done an extensive study on Indian biodiversity. This could be the tip of an iceberg." Darjeeling and the Dooars are considered among the richest in the world in terms of biodiversity. The area is home to 120 rare species of butterflies that have a huge market in at least 16 countries including China, US and Tibet. Last year, a German national was caught collecting insects from Darjeeling.

Torture slur on director Usha Ganguly
Kolkata, 12 July: The daughter-in-law of theatre director Usha Ganguly has accused her and her son of torture.
In a complaint lodged with Lake police station, Smita Chakrabartty Ganguly said: "I was constantly insulted by Usha Ganguly because my father was unable to fulfil her financial expectations."
Months after marriage in December 2006, she was allegedly tortured as her father could not pay more than Rs 1 lakh as dowry. Usha had allegedly demanded Rs 3.5 lakh.
Smita said she went to the police "when the torture became unbearable".
Yesterday, she narrated to a "women's rights activist" how her husband beat her up on several occasions. The two walked up to the nearest Jadavpur police station. Smita had to lodge the same complaint again this evening since the Gangulys' house is in the Lake area.
The complaint comes days after her husband Hirakendu lodged a diary accusing her of torturing him.
Usha said the torture charge against her was absurd. "To even think that I have been party to domestic violence is absurd. We can prove it. For 40 years, I have been doing plays against domestic violence. I have always seen her (Smita) as a daughter. The people of Calcutta, who know me, will realise how wrong all this is."
A senior police officer said: "Smita sought security, which we have promised."

Launch workers call off strike,Demand for higher wages
Dhaka,13 July : Water transport workers called off a nationwide wildcat strike Saturday, after hours of a deadlock that disrupted river traffic, said a labour leader.
Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation went on strike Thursday night demanding higher wages, which suspended public transports on major river routes.
"Workers and employees have pulled back from the strike after a tripartite meeting among the government, launch owners and labour leaders at BIWTA Bhaban," told BWTWF vice-president Shah Alam.
No launches left Dhaka, Barisal, Chandpur, Bhola, Barguna and Patuakhali Saturday morning. The meeting chaired by labour and employment secretary Mahfuzul Haque decided that the workers and employees would be paid interim allowances.
A committee has been formed to fix the amount of the allowances.
The government has formed another committee to reset wages for launch workers and employees. The committee has been given three months' time to complete its assignment.
New wages will be effective from 1 August, Shah Alam said.
On Friday, launch owners and workers had a five-hour meeting on the strike, with no result.
Alam said the prices of essentials had doubled and tripled in recent years but the water transport workers have not seen any commensurable pay rises, still surviving on a meagre monthly wage of Tk 1,900.
